The 7 People We See on Social Media (These Days)

This seems to be the longest 3 weeks of our lives. For me it feels like months already (kinda exaggerating 😁).

All the news about Covid-19 pandemic, the government and the people’s reactions we see on social media can be overwhelming. And we don’t want to lose our temper, sanity or worst, our hair. 😊✌️

But we can’t help but still use social media, whether to keep updated on the news, be entertained or to contribute in ways we know how (for others or for ourselves to cope). Ways that are different from one another. As we scroll through our news feed, these are (some of) the 7 people we see on social media (these days):

  1. The Passionate Critics

We see them everywhere. These people strongly express their opinions and beliefs, so passionately they can transfer the energy to us or absorb energy from us (thinking of a mutant who has that ability). They believe in the power of collective efforts to call out the government as they hope for positive changes.

  1. The Silent Coolers

They act cool. They are our classmates who don’t usually raise hands, but answer the teacher’s question when called upon. These people are not that “socially expressive”. They’re maybe shy or they choose to be passive because they either agree or just agree to disagree. They are also concerned. But maybe they’ve just experienced/seen too much from the news, they chose to be silent. And by the way, they sometimes unfollow. 😲

  1. The Divine Sharers

They are empathetic “encouragers” who may or may not have the same sentiments with others. Yes they have sentiments too, but choose to deal with it in the usually forgotten way. These people believe that this battle is not ours but God’s. So they pray for healing of everyone. And yes, they post copied or original quotes and share uplifting or appreciation posts.

  1. The Home Chefs

They are friends with the Dalgona Baristas. 🤗 These people prefer to focus their time and effort in making Instagram worthy foods. Their creativity is unimaginable as they can make various sardines recipes, Adobong hotdog or gourmet-looking instant Pancit canton. 🤩 They choose to spread their love for food instead of “uncooked” news on social media.

  1. The Throwback(pack)ers

Backpackers in their previous (to ECQ) lives. These people feel deprived as they were used to exploring outside. But they are still hopeful that soon they’ll use their bags not to pack groceries for quarantine, but their usual outing or hiking stuff. Until then, you’ll see them post throwback travel photos flooding our social media feeds with good vibes.

  1. The Challengers

“Challenge Accepted!” for these daring and playful people. They don’t mind posting their most embarrassing photos or selfies of their younger (Jurassic ✌️) selves to keep these fun “chain games” rolling. From photos of their journey to fitness (or fullness 😁) and long/short hair, to answering math problems and top N lists, they willingly accept the challenge without explaining themselves. These people do this not just for fun. Some do it for a cause like the #IstoryaKoTabangKo challenge, which is an online story telling for children.

  1. The Tiktokers

They tried hard to resist but after days of being quarantined, they eventually gave in. They were reserved but now fearless. They spread positivity by sacrificing their dignity (lol) to entertain us (or themselves 😁). Surprisingly, hidden talents are being revealed. Admit it! We’re waiting for their next “episodes” and already thinking which Tiktok shots and special effects we can pull off. 😁

Social media is so powerful it can instantly connect, inform and influence people from around the world. More so now that we are vulnerable it can challenge us, make us lol, “break” online friendships or even stress us out.

But the real power is in us. We are the people we see on social media today. And we’re free to choose how we want to be seen by our followers (yes, we have followers 😊) in the coming days, even after this lock-down period has ended. But as our friendly neighborhood said, with great power comes great responsibility. 🕸
